Rachel and Buzzie are engaging in their Yichud (Hebrew for "togetherness" or "seclusion"). This traditional Jewish practice keeps the bride and groom alone for 10–20 minutes after the wedding ceremony. Traditionally they would find a private and secluded room but these days they are really happening anywhere. Rachel and Buzzie chose a lovely little alcove of trees right by the ocean. Supposedly, the reason for yichud is that apparently standing under the canopy alone does not constitute chuppah, and seclusion is necessary to complete the wedding ceremony. That’s all good and official, but I just think it’s rather lovely to take a couple of minutes away from the hoopla and remember why you’re there in the first place.
